Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will perform at the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, organizers announced, placing one of Italy’s most celebrated musical figures at the center of the global event.
Bocelli is scheduled to appear during the opening ceremony on Feb. 6, 2026, at San Siro Stadium in Milan, a venue synonymous with Italian sports and culture. The performance will be broadcast worldwide as athletes from dozens of countries gather to mark the official start of the Winter Games.
Organizers said in a Jan. 11 statement that Bocelli’s performance “will constitute one of the most iconic moments of the event, uniting the spectacle with the essence of Olympic values,” noting that his participation will also “contribute a contemporary and global tone to the narrative.”
The announcement was shared on social media by organizers and Bocelli’s team, describing the tenor as “a global icon of Italian music and a voice loved across every continent.” The post added that Bocelli would bring an “extraordinary and unforgettable touch” to the ceremony.
Olympic officials said Bocelli’s appearance builds on a long-standing tradition of pairing major international sporting events with prominent cultural figures, particularly musicians whose work resonates across national and linguistic boundaries.
“It’s a concept he’s no stranger to having performed alongside the likes of Celine Dion, Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande,” the statement reads.
His performance will take place in Milan, while other events during the Games will be spread across northern Italy, including Cortina d’Ampezzo and surrounding Alpine regions.
The ceremony will also include a tribute to Giorgio Armani, who died in September at age 91. The designer’s long association with Milan includes such landmarks as the Armani/Teatro and the Armani/Silos museum. Armani also designed Italy’s Olympic team uniforms for many years.
Bocelli has previously performed at several major sporting events, making his Olympic appearance a continuation of that legacy. He sang at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, where his music underscored that country’s farewell to the Games.
In 2021, he also performed at the opening ceremony of UEFA Euro 2020 in Rome, delivering a widely viewed rendition of “Nessun dorma.”
The Milano Cortina opening ceremony is being designed to highlight Italy’s cultural heritage while maintaining broad international appeal, with music playing a central role in setting the tone for the Games. Bocelli’s participation is expected to anchor that vision, combining classical tradition with a modern global audience.
Bocelli rose to international prominence in the mid-1990s after winning the newcomers’ category at the Sanremo Music Festival. Since then, he has sold more than 90 million records worldwide, recorded multiple operas and crossover albums, and performed for heads of state, royalty, and audiences around the globe.
